Automatic Vehicle Location Process

This is a simplified process diagram for an Automatic Vehicle Location solution.  The process may change slightly depending on the type of product and supplier.

A GPS tracking system works by installing a Vehicle Location Unit into each vehicle. This unit reads location information from the GPS satellite network and sends the position co-ordinates and other variables such as the speed of the vehicle and the time back via a mobile data network such as GSM or GPRS. The information is then typically passed to the telematics service provider.  The TSP route the data, either directly to the customer down a dedicated communications connection, or pass the information through to a web server, where the user can access the information via a web browser.
